SkyCity Chief Executive Resigns

SkyCity’s chief executive, Michael Ahearne, has resigned from the company and will step down at the end of March 2024. In a statement, Ahearne said that he planned to return to Europe at the end of March 2024 with his family.

Julian Cook, SkyCity chair, said that Ahearne had led the company through a very complex and demanding period during his time as chief executive.

"This has included dealing with the significant fire at the New Zealand International Convention Centre and rebuild, navigating the business through Covid-19 and the recovery, and responding to regulatory matters relating to the SkyCity Adelaide business," Cook said.

Prior to working for SkyCity, Ahearne's experience within the casino hotel industry included ten years at The Star Entertainment Group in Sydney, as chief operating officer at ANZ, and director of product and innovation at Paddy Power Betfair in Dublin.

Throughout Ahearne’s tenure, Skycity has undergone significant investment and improvements in its compliance functions.

"Michael has worked hard to set a strong platform for the business going forward and has been tireless in seeking to do the right thing for SkyCity."

SkyCity has begun the process to find Ahearne’s replacement. The process is said to include internal and external candidates, adding that it will notify the market when the process was complete.
