AUSTRALIA | Perth has emerged as the leading Australian city for accommodation, with record hotel occupancy rates for 2024.
The Australian Hotels Association (WA) has released data confirming the tourism and hospitality industry in Western Australia is thriving, with Perth hotels recording the highest occupancy rates in the nation for the year ending 2024.
AHA(WA) CEO Bradley Woods said the increase in visitation can be attributed to several key strategic investments the WA Government has made in the sector, including new and more frequent aviation routes, a commitment to attracting major events, and the resurgence of corporate travel and business events.
“A diversified schedule of events and aviation routes has proven instrumental in promoting WA to diverse audiences, attracting visitors from across the country and the globe,” said Woods.
“This is reflected in the higher occupancy of our hotels and which results in increased spending in pubs, bars and restaurants.”
From January to December 2024, metropolitan Perth hotels achieved an impressive average occupancy level of 79.4 percent, marking a 3.9 percent rise compared to the same period in 2023. Additionally, Perth’s average daily room rate rose by 3.2 percent to AUD $227.31, demonstrating strong demand and the ability of hotels to command higher room rates.
Regional areas also experienced significant growth. The Kimberley and Pilbara region saw a 13.5 percent increase in occupancy rates, while Bunbury and Mandurah recorded a 10.0 percent rise. These figures highlight a robust recovery and growing pricing power across the state.
“The surge in visitation brings substantial benefits to the local economy, supporting jobs in hospitality and boosting revenue for licensed venues and local tourism operators. Western Australia’s vibrant tourism and hospitality sectors continue to contribute to a thriving community and a resilient economy,” said Woods.
“The WA Government’s ongoing efforts to invest in tourism infrastructure such as the expansion of the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre and initiatives are ensuring that the state remains a premier destination for visitors worldwide.”
