Construction begins on Christchurch hotel conversion project

Derelict Christchurch office building

Construction has begun on the conversion of a mid-20th-century office building in Christchurch into a new 40-room hotel.

The building was severely damaged in the earthquakes and was threatened with demolition.

The hotel will be operated by New Zealand-based Sarin Investment Group, who have four other Christchurch-based hotel projects opening between now and 2023.

Developers Box 112 own the building, and already have resource and building consents from the city council for their plans. They received a $900,000 grant towards preserving and reinforcing the building late 2017.
