SkyCity convention centre delayed to remove cladding

SkyCity’s New Zealand International Convention Centre has been further delayed, now expecting to open in the second half of 2020.

The project’s delays are caused by aluminium composite panels which has been linked to fire risks overseas such as the Grenfell Tower fire in London last year.

The project, which already costs approximately $700 million, will cost an extra $25 million to remove the cladding.

As a result, about 7,900 delegates won’t be able to attend events at NZICC because of its delay.
