Trans-Tasman Flight Path Returns

The nation's capital will soon be connected to the rest of the world, with a Qantas service from Wellington to Brisbane warmly welcomed by Wellington Airport. The service, which last took flight in 2015, will commence on the 29th of October, in a move Wellington Airport CEO, Matt Clarke is calling wonderful news.

“This is excellent news for travellers,” says chief executive Matt Clarke. “It means improved choice, competition and connections for travellers crossing the Tasman. Queensland is a popular holiday destination for New Zealanders, and there’s also a large expat population with lots of friends and families keen to see each other,” said Clarke.

“It’s great to see airline capacity building back, and we’re working hard to continue this.”

The services are planned to depart Brisbane at 8:05 am, arrive in Wellington at 2:40 pm, turn around again at 3:40 pm, and arrive back in the Queensland Capital at 4:35 pm.

The flight schedule has been timed to coincide with connecting flights through Wellington to other international airports in northern Queensland. The service follows a move from Fiji Airways, which re-instated flights from Wellington to Nandi to as many as four per week, and Jetstar, increasing services to the Gold Coast to four times a week during peak months.

Wellington Airport’s International passenger numbers are now back to approximately 76 percent of pre-covid numbers. The flight time between the two cities is just over four hours non-stop and is a 2,500-kilometre journey.

Both Wellington and Brisbane international airports have recently had renovations made to their respective terminals.
